A study is underway by Public Health to learn more about levels of the radioactive gas, radon, in the Hastings and Prince Edward counties area.
Homeowners may be eligible to receive a test of their homes, at no charge.
In a release, Public Health says radon is a naturally occurring, radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium found in rocks and soil.
It can enter buildings through cracks in foundation floors and walls, gaps in pipes, open floor drains or any other exposed soil.
Medical Officer of Health Dr. Peter Oglaza says breathing in high levels of radon for many years can lead to lung cancer, but there are steps homeowners can take to reduce their risk.
In a release, Oglaza notes,”The only way to find out the level of radon in your home is to test for it. This study is a great opportunity for local homeowners to receive a test at no charge, and to learn more about radon.”
To ensure representation from across the Hastings Prince Edward region, homeowners interested in participating in the radon study will be required
to complete a survey application HERE which will be accepted until November 15.
Individuals accepted will be contacted by email, with information about when and how to pick up their radon kits.
