Belleville is riding toward a trail route running from the west end of the city right up to the back door of Loyalist College.
Monday night, city council decided to not adopt the latest staff recommendations which would have avoided Meagher Place, but instead returned to its original plan to go by way of that street.
Plans have been underway since 2014 and were held up this year because of concerns by residents on Meagher that fencing would be right outside their front windows.
Council decided greenery could be used as it was with the development of Haig Road.
The other route being considered would have looped and doubled back to avoid Meagher, and would have cost an extra $75,000.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk says Loyalist College students walk on roads in the area.
Panciuk tells Quinte News, “Unfortunately we lost this season but we are going to get going on it immediately. We hope to have the pathway used over the winter. And then we’re working with Loyalist College as they deal with a bridge on that far end. It’s important for us to get all the way over to Avonlough Road as soon as we can, from Avondale.”
The trail work will begin this fall with completion expected next spring.
