The reigning Liberal MP in Northumberland-Peterborough South has been defeated by an upstart Conservative Party candidate.
Philip Lawrence edged Kim Rudd by about 2,500 votes, picking up 39.9% of the ballots cast.
Lawrence says he is ecstatic to win such a tight race and that he’s ready to prove himself to those who didn’t cast ballots his way.
Rudd finished with 36.2% of the vote and told supporters that her party has a lot to be proud of locally.
13.9% of voters cast ballots for the NDP’s Mallory MacDonald, 7.9% voted for the Green Party’s Jeff Wheeldon and 2.1% voted for the PPC’s Frank Vaughan.
Early voter turnout in the riding was 70.49%, which is down from 71% in 2015.
