Belleville city council has decided to take a strong stand on the condition of the former Intelligencer building in the heart of the city.
The discussion at Tuesday night’s meeting centred around the owners not complying with city orders regarding the state of the building.
Chief Building Inspector Ted Maracek told council that, in fact, the last order that was sent to the owner was returned unopened.
Council decided that the city should go to court and if a court order is not complied with, the city should ask for demolition.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk.
Councillor Chris Malette told council “people have been living in the building.”
Maracek stated that basement windows have been open and not secure.
Panciuk pointed to the Cabaret, the Sunluck Gardens building and the Stephen Adamson building which were demolished recently.
He said some owners “play games with our staff.”
Council voted to “proceed to take legal action.”
