Like other school boards in the area, the Hastings and Prince Edward District School Board will close its schools on Monday, if a new deal between unionized support workers and the province isn’t reached.
Director of Education Sean Monteith spoke to reporters on Friday and says the decision is being made in the interest of student safety, since educational assistants, custodians, clerical staff and others, won’t be in the buildings.
Monteith says the board will continue to evaluate the situation as it progresses.
He also says there’s no way to know how long a strike would last and at this point, it’s too early to tell what effect that might have on the school year itself.
And, he adds, while students won’t be at school, teachers will be expected to be there.
The Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic School Board and the Kawartha Pine Ridge School Board says they are closing their schools, if there’s a strike.
We’ll have updates here at quintenews.com and via our Twitter feed @quintenews, when updates are provided from the board.
