He was diminutive in stature but played with one of the biggest hearts, Wayne “Weiner” Brown, who helped lead the Belleville McFarlands to an Allan Cup Championship in 1958 and a World Hockey Championship in 1959 has passed away at the age of 88.
Brown was born in Belleville and had a long professional hockey career which stretched through the 1950’s and 60’s and wrapped up in Belleville with the Mohawks and Quinte’s. Brown played for the Boston Bruins during the 1954 playoffs but suffered a serious leg injury which cut his NHL career short.
Brown played 3 seasons with the Belleville McFarlands scoring 73 goals and 81 assists in 140 games.
Brown was a natural athlete who excelled in every sport he played including softball and golf. He was also officiated softball games for more than two decades and was named Umpire of the Year by the Belleville and District Softball League.
Weiner Brown was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
