As Quinte West OPP officers get set for their first long weekend patrol on Highway 401 the detachment is letting drivers know that they’ll be out in force.
Officers are running a targeted traffic campaign from Friday through to Monday, looking for impaired, distracted and aggressive drivers.
They’ll be set up not just on municipal roads, but along Highway 401, from Highway 37 to the Northumberland County border.
Authorities say 55 deaths and more than 9,100 crashes were linked to distracted driving alone on OPP patrolled roads last year, with more than 13,500 charges laid for that offence alone.
Distracted driving can land you a $1,000 ticket and three day licence suspension, while speeding more than 50 km/h over the limit can get you a seven day suspension.
If you suspect that a driver is impaired, police say you should immediately report it by calling 911.
