There will be no change to public transit service on Lemoine Street in Belleville.
A petition with about 45 signatures was presented to the Transit Advisory Committee yesterday (Wednesday) asking that bus service be stopped on Lemoine south of Maple Street because the buses were wrecking the street.
Transit staff said the buses were not responsible for the wear and tear, adding that secret checks showed that the buses were not running over the speed limit.
About 45 people use the service on Lemoine.
Council will be considering Lemoine Street for reconstruction in 2020 budget discussions.
Meanwhile, upgrades to the Belleville Transit terminal in the downtown could be coming sooner rather than later.
Transit Operations Manager Paul Buck told the advisory committee that just one bid was received for the upgrades totalling just under $300,000.
A budget of $350,000 had been set aside for the project.
The upgrades will improve washroom facilities for staff and the public, and will provide staff with better rest and kitchen facilities.
If city council approves the bid, the contractor wants to start work immediately and have the project complete this winter.
