Friday morning at the Belleville Bus Terminal, Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith announced that the provincial government will contribute $2.2 million in funding towards Belleville’s public transportation service.
The nomination for the funding is under the Canada Infrastructure Program public transit stream which is a multi-level government funding project.
Smith explains what the timeline will look like for this project.
With the $2.2 million, roughly $1.1 million will go towards the purchase of four new buses which will carry 5,472 people daily and the other $1.1 million will go towards upgraded bus shelters along a multi-use trail network in the area of Adam Street, University Avenue, Jamieson Bone Road and College Street East.
The motive behind the project is to improve life for the people in Belleville and make it easier for residents to get to work, but Smith says it’s not just about getting residents to work.
