The Belleville Police Service officially swore in two new constables Tuesday afternoon.
The ceremony, presided over by Justice Stephen Hunter who has held court for these ceremonies for over three decades, welcomed Constable Jesse Blanchard and Constable Matthew Sly into the force.
The two who just recently returned from the Ontario Police College in Aylmer, Ontario are the fifth and sixth officers to be sworn in this year.
Police Chief Ron Gignac told the family, friends, councillors and police service board who were in attendance, that these two were not just entering into a job, but it is who they are.
He said while Blanchard and Sly were being sworn in, all the eyes in the courtroom were on them, something that will not change going forward.
Justice Hunter welcomed the two to the justice system stating their goals are the same; for a safe and healthy community.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk was in attendance as well and said Blanchard and Sly will make a great addition to the service.
Jack Miller, Police Service Board Chair, spoke on behalf of the board and said today was just the beginning of their careers, which he hopes are long and safe.
Deputy Chief Mike Callaghan wrapped up the ceremony by saying there are two days that will always stick with Blanchard and Sly.
“Your first day with a coach and your first day on your own,” he stated.
Callaghan said they went through quite an ordeal to get to this point and now that they are here, they are on their way in this noble career and both have what it takes and that will make them a great asset to the community.
Callaghan said both Blanchard and Sly have the four qualities they look for in officers; common sense, compassion, empathy and a good, strong work ethic.
