A lightning strike Thursday is being blamed for a grass fire in Quinte West Friday afternoon.
Quinte West Firefighters responded to a farm on the north side of Frankford Road, between Flyboy Road and Collins Road, around 3:00 p.m.
Fire Chief John Whelan says lightning hit a tree and split it in half during Thursday’s storm, and the flames had been smouldering overnight, before igniting the field when the wind picked up today.
Eighteen firefighters knocked down the blaze, with the help of the department’s ATVs and 4×4 truck and were back at the fire hall about an hour later.
Whelan says he and other local fire chiefs are discussing a potential burn ban but have yet to put one in place.
