Prince Edward County Councillor Brad Neiman wants to see what can be done to make an intersection along a busy highway safer.
He brought forward a motion during council’s Committee of the Whole meeting on Thursday to see what can be done to make the intersection of Hwy. 62 and County Road 1 safer.
That intersection was the scene of two collisions in two days earlier this summer and Councillor Nieman wants to see mixed mode use, reduced speeds or even a traffic circle put in place in an effort to move toward zero fatalities and serious injuries.
Mayor Steve Ferguson noted they may have their work cut out for them with the Ministry of Transportation.
Many around the horseshoe felt a traffic circle would be ideal as it keeps traffic moving yet is a smart traffic calming measure.
Mayor Ferguson said if this works out he’d like to see the intersection of Hwy. 62 and County Road 14 looked at next.
Nieman sought to have the OPP, Police Services Board, Traffic Advisory Committee and Ministry of Transportation all involved in making the intersection safer.
Acting CAO Robert McAuley said they’ve had discussions with the MTO regarding that intersection and while the County believes it to be a problem intersection, the MTO disagrees.
He said the County thinks it is a lot of traffic, while they (the MTO) doesn’t; the County thinks there are lots of accidents, they don’t.
McAuley says the MTO have previously rejected a traffic circle, additional stops and a road widening.
