Markham’s Hailey McLaughlin has a two shot lead after the opening round of Golf Ontario’s Women’s Amateur and Mid Amateur championship being played at Black Bear Ridge in Belleville.
McLaughlin who golfs out of the Granite Club in Stouffville opened with a 2 under par 69. Bridgitte Thibault, who played at the Augusta National Women’s Amateur is in second place. Plainfield’s Jess Mercer, a member at Black Bears opened with a 5 over 77. She’s tied for 23rd place.
The provincial championship continues today through Thursday.
Ninety-five-year-old Belleville Sports Hall of Famer Betty Ingram Wonnacott opened the championship with a ceremonial tee shot.
