City of Belleville staff are recommending the Planning Advisory Committee approve a zoning change for the former Nortel building property on Sidney Street
to allow a marijuana processing operation.
Developers are proposing a 60,000 square foot processing operation in a vacant part of the building that would create marijuana-based products for medicinal and recreational use.
Only around 10 marijuana plants would be on site at any one time.
It’s suggested up to 50 people could be employed there.
Some residents on nearby Boyce Court have objected to the plan, citing concerns about odor, security and lighting. They are also concerned that there is an elementary school next door to the property.
City staff say the proposal meets all the requirements to allow a zoning change.
Belleville’s Planning Advisory Committee meets Tuesday at 5:30 at city hall. City council would have the final say on the matter.
