Northumberland OPP say the body of a homicide victim has been found.
Police say on Monday afternoon (May 27), two kayakers discovered a body near the shoreline of the Trent Severn Waterway near 8th Line East, just north of Campbellford.
A post-mortem identified the body as that of missing Trent Hills man Blythe Sexsmith.
The 61-year-old had been missing since May 6, when officers began investigating an alleged assault on Centennial Lane, north of Campbellford.
Officers arrived on scene and found evidence of a person who had been seriously injured. Northumberland OPP officers with the assistance of the OPP Central Region Emergency Response Team (ERT), Canine Unit, Aviation Unit, Marine Unit and the Underwater Search and Recovery Unit (USRU), conducted an extensive search of the area for the victim.
The man charged with first degree murder in the death of Sexsmith has died while in jail.
A report in Today’s Northumberland says the suspect, 62-year-old Stephen Murray Kelly of Peterborough County, was found in medical distress in the Central East Corrections Centre in Lindsay.
He was rushed to hospital but died there.
This investigation is ongoing by members of the Northumberland OPP Major Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Brad Robson of the OPP Criminal Investigation Branch.
