Members from the Northumberland Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have responded to an increase in collisions involving wildlife in the county during the month of May.
The majority of the collisions have occurred between dusk and dawn which is the time of day they are most active searching for food.
Reduce your collision risk by utilizing the following tips:
- Scan the road ahead from shoulder to shoulder. When you see wildlife beside the road, slow down and pass carefully as they may suddenly bolt onto the road.
- Watch for the yellow wildlife warning signs that indicate an area of increased risk, however these animals can be seen anywhere at any time. Drivers should therefore maintain a heightened level of awareness and slow down when driving in rural areas that are absent of these signs.
- Use high beams at night where possible and watch for glowing eyes of animals.
- Stay in control. Watch your speed and take extra precautions when driving at night as visibility is greatly reduced. Slowing down will give you that extra few seconds to respond.
- Never swerve suddenly. This could cause your vehicle to go out of control or head into oncoming traffic.
- Brake firmly but maintain control of your vehicle if you see an animal is standing on, or crossing the roadway. Never assume the animal will move out of your way.
- Stop as safely as possible if a wild animal is crossing the road. Remember, deer often move in groups. If you see one, know there are likely more in the nearby area.
- If hitting a wild animal is unavoidable, remember to stay in control.
The Northumberland OPP remind motorists that there are wild animals that roam the county and often cross our roadways while on their journeys. Please keep this in mind, and be vigilant while driving in order to avoid collisions.
