The Mayor of Alwick-Haldimand is appealing to residents to help police figure out who is behind a string of fires in the township recently.
There have been three suspicious fires in the township since mid-March, including one on Tuesday night, which destroyed the historic St. James Anglican Church, which was built in 1863.
Mayor John Logel said in a statement that he “sends his condolences to those who have lost property and, in some cases, important pieces of history and heritage”.
He is also thanking local emergency responders for ther “response and professionalism in dealing with these incidents” and says he has “been in direct contact with emergency personnel, expressing full support for their ongoing efforts to keeping the community safe”.
Logel is urging residents to provide police with any tips they might have, connected to the fires, by contacting Northumberland OPP at (905) 372-5421, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
