The rezoning’s done – Costco’s coming
Belleville Mayor Mitch Panciuk called it “a great day for Belleville” as city council amended some zoning to allow the Costco development on Bell Boulevard.
Panciuk told council at Monday night’s meeting that the last time such a development was considered was the Quinte Mall in the 1970s.
He noted there will be 800 jobs in the complex.
And he pointed to the $1.3 million in taxes each year from the development.
Panciuk also emphasized the safe access to the Costco project because there will be three entrances, with traffic lights at each one.
Settlers Ridge decision postponed
A decision on the proposed changes to a new phase of the Settler’s Ridge subdivision off Sidney Street in Belleville will have to wait for later this month.
Monday night, city council decided to delay any decision on the application by the developers for rezoning on part of phase 5 to allow for 40 townhouses.
If approved, the townhouses would replace 25 single family homes that had been proposed for the property.
Council decided to postpone any decision after learning the mayor had received a letter from the developers.
That letter outlines a number of answers to residents’ concerns, including that there would be sufficient parking, and the density is within the parameters of the subdivision.
It states, “The townhomes have been configured back to back within the centre island of Covington Crescent and have no impact on existing homes.”
Delegation to twin city Gunpo
Belleville is sending a delegation of a dozen people to the city’s twin city of Gunpo, South Korea, later this month.
It’s the first such trip in a number of years.
Gunpo delegations have been here twice without a reciprocal trip by a Belleville delegation.
Mayor Mitch Panciuk says it is a chance to “rekindle the long term fellowship with Gunpo.”
The delegation will have meetings with the Canadian Embassy to discuss companies that may be interested in moving to Canada.
And there will be tours of industries.
Panciuk says the city will also pay tribute to Simon Kang who has been an ambassador for Belleville in the Gunpo exchange.
Individuals in the delegation pay their own way.
The city pays expenses for Mayor Panciuk.
