A group advocating for the homeless spent a cold night in front of the Belleville Public Library overnight Saturday.
The city has designated the library as a “warming centre” however it wasn’t open last night because the temperature wasn’t minus 15 degrees or colder.
Paul Tavares, who’s travelling the province raising funds for the homeless, slept in front of the library’s doors and said people need help staying warm in temperatures warmer than minus 15 as well.
At one point, about a dozen people, some of them chronically homeless, gathered in front of the library with temperatures as low as minus 13.
Belleville councillors Sean Kelly and Pat Culhane spoke to the protestors.
