Hastings County’s Community and Human Services Committee is hoping county council will change policy when it comes to Rent-Geared-to-Income housing opportunities.
On Thursday, the committee voted that every one-in-five applications for social housing be offered to people who are not considered “in crisis”.
People who are seriously ill, victims of domestic violence or are homeless now are considered “in crisis”.

The change, if approved by Hastings County council, should speed up the process for people not in crisis.
Currently, 1,600 applications for social housing are on a waiting list, with some people or households waiting as long as five years.
