Work will get underway this year on a new Catharine Street Pedestrian Bridge over the Moira River in downtown Belleville, but with an increased price tag.
The old bridge was shut down last year due to its rapid deterioration.
The new bridge will feature a much wider structure with new lighting,
It will be able to accommodate higher volumes of pedestrian and cyclist traffic.
Director of Engineering Rod Bovay tells Quinte News the city is close to a resolution with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans regarding removal of the middle pier and installation of a new one in the river.
Bovay says construction cannot begin until after the end of the spawning season.
The bridge span itself will not be put in place until 2020.
Earlier this week at its 2019 capital budget deliberations, city council approved another $1.2 million for this project bringing it to $3.7 million
