The Belleville Police Services Board has approved the police force’s 2019 capital budget.
The police service will be asking the city for a little over $2 million towards capital expenses like an overhaul of the radio and other communications systems, equipment for the traffic and forensics units, as well as a number of technological needs for the new police station.
Chief Ron Gignac says it’s been a complicated process, especially with completion of the new building coming up.
Of that $2,097,850 total, Chief Gignac was planning to have more than $1.3 million come from the New Capital Build Reserve, but there was a miscommunication of how much was in that account, leading to some concern that there wouldn’t be enough money to fund some of the requested purchases.
But Board Chair Jack Miller is confident those funds will be made up, once City Council approves its budget for the year in the spring.
