Provincial government’s cut to university college tuition, and changes in student loans is causing concern for Loyalist College students.
The province is cutting tuition by 10% percent.
Free tuition introduced by the former liberal government is gone.
In an interview Tuesday, president of the Loyalist College Student Government Scott Rook said the 10% cut in tuition isn’t enough to make up for changing more of the student grants to loans.
Rook tells Quinte News, “The important question for students, they want to know the impact on Ontario Student Assistance Program, particularly the reduction of needs-based grants and the shift from a predominately grant-based system to a loans-based one.”
He said, “Last year Loyalist rated as the number one college for grads getting jobs, so since our grads were getting jobs quicker alumnae could pay off loans quicker, within a six month grace period. Now taking away the grace period it’s a little bit harder to pay off those loans.”
The tuition and other change will take place this fall and remain in place for the 2019 – 2020 year, as well as 2020-2021.
