The CEO of Tri-Board Transportation admits that it is unusual for buses to be cancelled because of cold temperatures and not snow, but says the decision was made in the interest of student and driver safety.
Gord Taylor spoke on CJBQ’s Lorne Brooker Show on Tuesday morning.
He says most schools aren’t letting kids outside in these types of temperatures anyway, so it makes sense that they don’t spend an extended amount of time outdoors, waiting for the bus.
Tuesday is the second straight day that buses have been cancelled for students in the Hastings and Prince Edward, Algonquin and Lakeshore Catholic and Limestone District school boards.
Taylor adds that it’s not just him making an arbitrary decision.
He says the process of deciding on cancellations starts early in the morning, with Tri-Board’s weather captains, scattered across its 10 zones.
He adds that Tri-Board runs more than 600 buses, is responsible for 30,000 riders and its drivers cover more than 40,000 kilometres each day, which is the distance around the earth at the equator.
