The Quinte Humane Society is seeking financial support from the city of Belleville toward a new animal shelter.
The delegation appearing before city council this week indicated the new centre would cost $10 million.
Belleville is being asked to contribute $1 million, two-thirds of the $1.5 million being requested from municipalities in the area.
Humane Society Board Chair Donna Endicott told council two-thirds of the animals in the shelter are from Belleville.
Endicott said the present shelter “has reached the end of its life and the septic system is beyond repair.”
The plan is to seek municipal, provincial and federal funding for the project.
Executive Director Frank Rocket said the idea is to begin construction at a site on Wallbridge-Loyalist Road, in late 2020 or early 2022.
Council referred the request to the city’s 2019 operating budget.
