Local chambers of commerce say two recent announcements by the provincial and federal governments are proof their work is paying off.
In a joint statement, representatives from the Belleville and Quinte West chambers of commerce say a federal decision to allow business owners to write off capital expenditures faster is making a difference for those who want to upgrade their technology, while aligning building code rules will pay off for businesses in the construction sector and skilled trades.
Provincially, the chambers say they are relieved that Bill 47 has received royal assent, which nixes a bill that would shoot the minimum wage up to $15 per hour in January.
They say the minimum wage hike wasn’t a major concern locally, since many business owners already pay fair and competitive wages, but the new bill allows for a more balanced approach to support small businesses, by not pushing through major changes suddenly.
