The Belleville Police Service responded to 44 calls between November 5, 2018 at 5 a.m. and November 6, 2018 at 5 a.m.
Residential break, enter and theft
On November 5, 2018 at 2:38 p.m. police attended to a residential break-in to a home on the west side of the city. Homeowners returned to their property on Monday afternoon. They soon realized that their home had been broken into sometime between Saturday and Monday afternoon. Although there was no indication of forced entry, police did report that an undisclosed amount of alcohol was stolen. Traffic enforcement
On November 5, 2018 at 2:51 p.m. members of the Traffic Safety Unit stopped a motor vehicle on Casey Road for the initial offence of speeding. The driver, a 17-year-old, who cannot be named under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was driving double the speed limit – clocked at 120 km/hr in a 60 km/hr zone. This constituted the offence of “stunt driving.” The driver was also charged with “driving while suspended”. The youth had his driver’s licence confiscated on the spot for 7 days and his vehicle impounded for the same length of time. If convicted, the driver faces a fine starting at $2,000 and up to $10,000. He was released from custody with a summons to appear in Provincial Offences Court at a later date.
Shoplifter arrested
On November 5, 2018 at 3:39 p.m. police responded to a call of a male caught stealing a quantity of merchandise from a business in the west end of the city. Police report the man was somewhat confrontational while initially being detained by staff at the store. Police arrested 35-year-old city man Terry Gray, charging him with “theft under $5000″. He was released from custody on an appearance notice with a court date later this month at the Ontario Court of Justice.
Family dispute arrest
On November 5, 2018 at 9:52 p.m. police responded to a family dispute in the north end of the city. An investigation resulted in a 13-year-old youth being arrested for breaching the peace. This person was taken to the Belleville Police Service and held until such time that the breaching of the peace was no longer a threat. The child was released to a family member later in the morning without further incident. There was no property damage or injury(s) reported.
