On Saturday October 13, 2018 Ontario Provincial Police Auxiliary officers from the Quinte West Detachment and the Quinte West Community Policing members will be patrolling various neighbourhoods and business parking lots in the City of Quinte West in an attempt to educate the community in the importance of safe guarding your vehicle and valuable property.
The program is called Lock It or Lose It which is a crime prevention program where your car is graded on its secure condition at the time of officer’s observation. Officers will leave a Lock It or Lose It card on the windshield of your vehicle after inspection with a grade in the following areas:
Vehicle Unlocked
Vehicle unlocked with keys in view
Window(s) opened
Valuables in plain view
Or the best grade – vehicle is locked, keys removed, windows closed, valuables out of sight.
The program also offers protection tips to protect your vehicle and valuables inside.
Quinte West OPP have recently responded to several thefts from motor vehicles with a common theme being that the involved vehicles were left unlocked or the property was not properly secured and out of sight from potential thieves.
The OPP want to remind every driver to:
Always roll up your vehicles’ windows, lock the doors and pocket the keys.
Never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.
Never leave your car keys in plain view.
Always park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
Never leave valuables or packages in full view – secure them in the trunk or out of sight.
