Prince Edward County is putting the province on notice that they don’t support the cancellation of the Basic Income Pilot Project.
A motion was brought forward by Mayor Robert Quaiff to notify the provincial government, along with MPP Todd Smith that the project is a necessary one.
At a poverty roundtable in Mississauga, Quaiff says there were some unbelievable stats presented.
In Prince Edward County, 13.5% of the population is considered low income.
Councillor Bill Roberts did mention to those around the horseshoe that Premier Doug Ford did say during the election he would not be making cuts to the program.
The resolution also stated that the province be urged to maintain the planned increase to social assistance rates, continue the Basic Income Pilot Project and its planned evaluation and create policies to encourage good jobs with regular hours and benefits.
