The hot-button local election issue of housing will take centre stage on Monday night, but it’s the landlords who will be asking the questions to Belleville’s mayoral candidates.
The Quinte Region Landlord Association says “landlords are being handcuffed by government policy” and is hosting a mayoral all candidates meeting at Sans Souci to see how the four candidates in Belleville would handle the issue.
The group says things like excessive property taxes on multi-residential buildings over a certain size, municipalities chasing down landlords when tenants don’t pay their water/sewer bills and others are causing them to have to hike rents, which adds to the lack of affordable housing in the city.
The event is open to all landlords, property managers, social service groups, or anyone involved in the rental housing industry and begins at 6:30 Monday evening.
There is a $10 meeting fee and pre-registration is required at the Quinte Region Landlord Association website.
