At least one Quinte West resident is voicing his displeasure with a council decision earlier this summer, which would raise councillors’ salaries, to offset the costs of some upcoming federal tax changes.
Currently, one-third of councillor salaries is tax exempt, but that changes in December and would see councillors taxed on their full remuneration and overall income.
At Monday night’s meeting George Tkacyk told councillors he felt the 18% raise was unacceptable.
The increase would mean that, despite the tax changes, there would be no difference in councillors’ take-home pay and will cost the city about $53,460 in the 2019 fiscal year.
Multiple councillors did note that they either don’t claim things like mileage or parking, or make significant donations to various charities and organizations, from their remuneration and other non-council salaries.
