Plans are underway to make some changes in zoning and temporary use at the Holgate Tire and Battery property in Belleville’s Thurlow Ward.
The issue involves concerns about tire storage, as well as two trailers on site.
Tuesday night, the city’s Planning Committee had before it proposed changes to the zoning on the land at the south-west corner of Farnham Road and Cannifton Road North.
It currently has a chip truck on it but is not zoned commercial.
Also, there was a request for a temporary use by-law for two storage trailers for up to two years.
Adam Holgate stores tires for a provincial tire program. Holgate told the committee that at one time there were 1,000 tires being stored on the property but that has been narrowed down to fifteen.
He said there have been “big strides in the last couple of weeks” in cleaning up the property and he has been working closely with city staff on the issue.
Councillor Paul Carr said there are “outstanding orders from the city on the property regarding property standards,” and he said, “Area residents are very concerned about the storage of tires. ”
Carr indicated area residents are “concerned about tire fires and human health.”
Mayor Taso Christopher suggested giving the application on the trailers one year and Holgate could come back to staff for assistance and council could review it.
The Planning Committee is recommending city council approve both requests.
