The move is on to ensure that the historical aspects of Belleville’s Memorial Arena are preserved for future generations.
Memorial Arena in the city’s downtown was designated historical under the Ontario Heritage Act in 2003.
Seven years ago consultants Golder and Associates prepared a 107-page report on the building.
This summer, in June, city council rezoned the building from community centre to commercial.
It included in its report that Heritage Belleville should have some input on what would be the heritage or historical aspects of the building, so that a
developer would have clarity with regard to redeveloping the Memorial building.
Heritage Belleville wants this present council to clarify just what needs to be preserved, ahead of a new council after the fall election.
