A longtime general manager of the Belleville Bulls and one of the franchise’s most notable members has been honoured for his longstanding service to the Ontario Hockey League.
The OHL announced Thursday that Larry Mavety is the recipient of the Bill Long Award for Distinguished Service, recognizing his outstanding contributions to the league.
Mavety served as an OHL general manager and held coaching roles for 30 seasons between 1981 and 2011, 24 of those with the Belleville Bulls and Kingston Frontenacs.
He’s fifth on the OHL’s coaching wins list, has the most wins for a Bulls coach of all time at 435 and is just one of six coaches to earn more than 600 career wins in the league.
Mavety was the OHL’s coach of the year in 1990 and was inducted into the Belleville Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
NHL players who developed under Mavety include Darren McCarty, Bryan Marchment, Daniel Cleary, Richard Park and more.
