The federal government has announced $30 million in prize money to help improve housing conditions on First Nations reserves.
Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte Chief Don R Maracle told Quinte News Friday this funding goes beyond what the government allocated in 2016 to address housing issues in First Nations, Inuit and Metis communities.
More details are to be announced this fall with the $30 million winnings awarded over three rounds starting in the spring of 2019.
Indigenous Services Minister Jane Philpott says government funding alone can’t surmount the scale of the housing problem facing indigenous communities.
Chief Maracle told Quinte News he will be encouraging his staff to submit an application.
A report found 18.3% of Indigenous households required hefty repairs, were too small for families, or stretched families financially.
