The Northumberland Affordable Housing committee is calling on the Ontario PC government to allow the pilot project on basic income to continue.
In a letter to the government, the committee states that “keeping people in poverty is not a path to better employment and income opportunities.”
Spokesman David Sheffield says the basic income pilot program “would allow people to get involved in education, training, or better work opportunities.”
Sheffield also notes, “It’s important to consider that 70% of people living in poverty are working, so the simplistic notion the government puts forward, that people just need a job, is not accurate”.
The Ford government has indicated the Basic Income Guarantee Pilot Project, which involves 4,000 people in Lindsay, Hamilton-Brant, and Thunder Bay, will be cancelled.
