He has yet to play a game for the Belleville Senators but goaltender Mike McKenna has already won a major American Hockey League award.
McKenna is the recipient of the 2018 AHL’s President’s Award for overall excellence.
The 35-year-old McKenna signed with Ottawa as a free agent last weekend and will share the Belleville net with top prospect Filip Gustavsson this season.
McKenna led the Texas Stars to the Calder Cup finals. It was his second straight year in the championship round after helping Syracuse win the AHL Eastern Conference final in 2017. He also made two appearances with the Dallas Stars earning his first NHL win since 2013.
The St. Louis native is the winningest U.S. born goaltender in AHL history with 223 career victories. McKenna is tied for 9th with 27 shutouts and 11th with 461 career appearances.
