The study of the ecosystem around Oak Lake, aimed at identifying issues with water quality and levels, will begin this month.
Director of Public Works and Environmental Services Chris Angelo says consultants are starting a background study this month, with a public meeting and more work coming up, as they evaluate the watershed around the lake.
A public meeting will be held in mid-August to introduce residents to consultants from Hutchinson Envrironmental Services and Angelo says public engagement will be a key throughout the length of the study.
Angelo adds that the Ministry of Environment, Lower Trent Conservation and Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health will all be consulted and have their chance for input and analysis throughout the project.
Some of the components of the study include:
- Identification of pollution sources within the watershed
- Identification of water quality indicator parameters
- Water quality sampling and monitoring over four seasons at 11 locations in the lake with a focus on oxygen depletion
- A review of all agricultural discharges into the lake and propose remedial actions to improve water quality
- A review of existing septic systems
- A review of existing culverts and drainage affecting high water levels
- Development of a lake management plan, with considerations for aquatic plant growth, algae blooms and water quality
- At least three public open house meetings to keep all residents informed
A final report is to be completed and presented to City Council no later than June 1, 2019.
