A farming family in Northumberland County has become the first to make a major statement in farm safety.
Allan and Terry Carruthers of Alnwick/Haldimand are the first rural property owners to have a “Farm 911” sign installed at the field entrance to their 130 acre property, marking it with a civic address.
The Farm 911 initiative, also called the Emily Project, encourages farm owners to have their rural properties assessed with civic addresses, which adds them to the emergency response system.
That gives first responders the ability to use GPS and other data to help locate rural properties in the case of an emergency.
The Emily Project was named after Emily Trudeau, who died after a farming accident in 2014 and the initiative is being pushed strongly in Northumberland, Hastings, Prince Edward and Lennox and Addington Counties.
