One of the most important pieces of a town’s infrastructure is their water and wastewater systems.
It also happens to be the one taken most for granted according to Jeff Graham, President of GSS Engineering Consultants.
He appeared in front of Brighton council on Monday night and said most of the Harbour Street sewage pumping station is made up of parts that are well over 40 years old.
Mayor Mark Walas says they have a reserve fund specifically for major infrastructure investments such as this.
Graham estimated this project to take care of five major components will bring with it a price tag of $670,000 plus tax.
He told council they would we wise to get the pumping station brought up to standard as it handles 65% of the town’s total sewage flow before installing a second forcemain as a backup in case of a failure.
Council approved a motion to get this project going as they require Ministry of Environment and Climate Change approvals before they can begin any upgrades and Graham says it could be as long as a year before they have the approvals and the tender done.
