Payday loan establishments will again be a topic of discussion at a meeting of Belleville city council today (Monday).
Council will be asked to approve the creation of a by-law regulating where payday loan operations can be located.
Staff is recommending that such businesses only be allowed on Bell Boulevard, North Front Street and Dundas Street.
And further, only one payday loan operation be allowed in each of the three zones.
Those businesses already in existence in those zones and elsewhere would be allowed to continue to operate under a “grandfather” clause.
Many frown on payday loan businesses because of the very high interest rates charged on short term small amount loans.
