The person responsible for the operation of kidney dialysis centres in southeastern Ontario has repeated what has been said before.
Lori Van Manen, Director of the Southeast Regional Renal Program, says a new dialysis clinic at Trenton Memorial Hospital is a priority, but it won’t be built in the immediate future.
Van Manen says despite what citizens’ advocacy group OurTMH says, kidney patients from this area are being served well, considering the amount of money for dialysis available.
However, Van Manen admits the costs and aggravation involved for people to get to Kingston three times a week for treatment can be very hard on some patients and she says they hope to get the Canadian Cancer Society involved.
Van Manen says patients from the Quinte West Brighton area who currently travel to Kingston are doing so because they are too sick or medically unstable to be served in a satellite clinic, adding that even if a clinic was established at TMH, those patients would still have to go to Kingston for their treatments.
