Officials with Quinte Health Care have given another update on repair work to the Quinte 5 Medicine Unit at Belleville General Hospital after a fire last week.
QHC’s Catherine Walker says after further assessments of the work required, the unit is expected to be closed for another eight weeks, with the goal to reopen it the week of July 9.
Walker says the extensive work includes rebuilding the kitchenette and areas nearby, replacing various ceiling tiles and lighting fixtures and cleaning and installing new duct work.
Workers also have to clean and wrap all of the units patient care equipment, deep clean electronic equipment and do some patching and painting on walls throughout the entire unit.
80 patients on Quinte 5 and other floors were evacuated.
Some of those patients are now staying in various other units of BGH, while others have been moved to Prince Edward County Memorial and Trenton Memorial Hospitals while the work is completed.
