The Wellington Dukes had to do it the hard way but they got it done.
Ted McGeen scored 59 seconds into overtime to give Wellington a 3-2 come from behind win over the Steinbach Manitoba Pistons at the RBC Cup in Chilliwack British Columbia.
The Dukes battled back from a 2-0 second period deficit with a short handed goal by Bryce Yetman and a third period power play goal from Mitchell Mendonca. Shots on goal were even at 29 aside. Jonah Captriotti stopped 27 shots in the win.
On his game winning goal McGeen said ““The puck kind of popped loose after they had three men caught down low. It went to Andrew Rinaldi up the right wing and I started cutting over. He could tell I wanted the puck and he dropped it right to me. I just shot it short side and it went in.”
Wellington coach John Druce says they’ve had to do it all season. Druce says they’ve had some slow starts at times and hopes that playing games on back to back nights will get them off to a better start against the host Chilliwack Chiefs tonight. (10pm Eastern)
The five teams at the RBC are closely matched as 4 of the 5 games to date have been decided in overtime. Wellington has 3 points which ties them with Chilliwack and the Ottawa Junior Senators. The Wenatchee Washington Wild lead with 5 points.
