A Belleville Councillor has expressed some concern about what the city is doing about preparing for federal cannabis legislation.
At Monday night’s city council meeting, Councillor Paul Carr asked Director of Engineering Rod Bovay for an update on a city “working group” on the issue.
Bovay said planning staff is “working on it.”
Carr emphasized there were, “public health concerns, and police interest in technical roadside sobriety tests for cannabis.”
He said “the sooner the better for the working group to get together on the issue.”
Great St. James Street project
Belleville council has approved rezoning for a new affordable housing apartment building.
The 32-unit building will be located at 111 Great St. James Street, which is behind The Beer Store, which fronts on Station Street.
The developer says rents would be about 80% of current market rents.
Council had received a letter from a resident of nearby Alexander Street who says the land is flood-prone.
The developer plans underground water tanks to help with draining the site.
Questions DBIA appointments
Belleville Councillor Kelly McCaw has questioned the need to appoint new representatives on the Downtown Business Improvement Association.
At Monday night’s meeting, McCaw proposed the request be deleted from the by-laws before council.
Following the meeting, she said it would be better to wait for the election this fall, and let the new councillors make the appointments.
City clerk Matt MacDonald said the DBIA had reported to him it wanted the appointments, and council supported the by-law.
