It’s always important to know the risks and be prepared and safe in the case of an emergency.
And Quinte West OPP reminds the public of the key essentials to have with you when that situation arises.
The annual Emergency Preparedness Week runs this week until Saturday and is a national awareness initiative that takes place annually during the first week of May.
Quinte West OPP suggest that you prepare an emergency supply for a minimum of three days.
Some items to consider are:
Flashlight
Spare batteries (for radio and flashlight)
First-aid kit
Telephone that can work during a power disruption
Candles and matches/lighter
Extra car keys and cash
Important papers (identification)
Non-perishable food (ready-to-eat items that do not require refrigeration)
Manual can opener
Bottled water (4 litres per person per day)
Clothing and footwear
Blankets or sleeping bag
Toilet paper and other personal items
Medication
Backpack/duffle bag
Whistle (to attract attention if needed)
Entertainment activities i.e. playing cards
A vehicle emergency kit should also be considered and stored safely in each of your vehicles; a roadside Safety Kit can include:
Flashlight and batteries
Lightweight Collapsible Shovel
Emergency Candles
Box of Matches
Blanket
Orange “Emergency Help – Call Police” Banner
Light Stick
Siphon Pump
Booster cable
Emergency Whistle
Rain Poncho
