Nomination season opened Tuesday for the municipal elections and Belleville officials say there are a few rules potential nominees should know about.
The municipal nomination period runs for nearly three months and, once someone has filed the proper papers at city hall, the campaigning can begin for the fall election.
Belleville’s city clerk Matt MacDonald tells Quinte News you can’t buy lawn signs, campaign hats or advertise in any way before filing.
He says there are a number of penalties under the Municipal Elections Act financing rules.

MacDonald says, “Thurlow Ward Councillor Paul Carr was the first to file papers in Belleville at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, when the nomination period opened, and he could have started campaigning by 8:42 a.m.”
Councillor Kelly McCaw has also filed her nomination papers for the October election.
