The village of Wellington is seeing a surge of growth and while that isn’t a bad thing, the traffic speeding through the downtown is.
Following a deputation during the Prince Edward County Committee of the Whole session on Thursday afternoon at Shire Hall, council asked staff to look at alternative ways to slow traffic down physically.
Evan Nash, president of the Wellington and District Business Association, appeared in front of councillors to voice some of the concerns he and other business owners and residents have.
He said the county is failing to provide basic safety to their residents, specifically the two most vulnerable sectors of the population.
While he says he understands it’s not just a Wellington problem or even a Prince Edward County problem; he says something does need to be done.
Councillors agreed that speeding wasn’t solely an issue in Wellington.
Nash says they need a crosswalk in front of the school and noted there isn’t even a school zone sign.
He feels traffic calming measures at the edge of town, such as narrowing the traffic lanes, is one option available.
He said there are lots of ideas out there, it’s just figuring out which one works best for them.
The Business Association has contacted the Prince Edward detachment of the OPP to get radar signs put in at their own cost.
Councillor Kevin Gale remarked that the radar signs are quite effective, but it is unfortunate they have to buy one.
Nash said he was disappointed they would have to purchase the sign but the Association is willing to do so.
He says he knows it’s a tricky issue and that is why the Business Association can’t handle it on their own.
