The Belleville Police Service responded to 59 calls between April 12, 2018 at 5 a.m. and April 13, 2018 at 5 a.m.
Motor vehicle collisions
Police responded to eight motor vehicle collisions in the preceding 24-hour period. Seven of the collisions were cleared to be reported at the collision reporting centre as there was minor property damage only.
At 1:01 p.m. on April 12, 2018 police investigated a collision between a motor vehicle and a scooter in the Dundas Street East area. The scooter driver suffered a minor injury and the driver of the motor vehicle was charged with “Fail to yield to traffic on through highway” under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario.
Theft
On April 12, 2018 at 9:17 p.m. police were called to a north-end shopping centre for a report of an adult female stealing merchandise. An investigation resulted in a 31-year-old city woman being charged with theft under five thousand dollars. She has been released from custody on a promise-to-appear in Provincial court later next month.
Domestic disputes
On April 12, 2018 at 10:09 a.m. police attended to an area on the west hill for a reported domestic situation. An investigation revealed a man and a woman in their 30s were involved in an argument regarding one of them being locked out of the home. Police assisted the couple with their issue. The male eventually left with his mother. There was no report of injury or property damage.
A second domestic occurrence on April 12, 2018 at 8:39 p.m. resulted in officers proceeding to another west-end residence where a man was being difficult with a female and a young child inside the residence. Police intervened. The couple was spoken to and the male left for the night to stay with relatives. Alcohol was a factor in this incident. Although there was no report of injury or damage at this location, Child Protection Services have also been notified.
Family dispute
On April 13, 2018 at 00:46 a.m. police responded to a disturbance call at a residence in the west end of the city. Officers arrived to observe a disturbance within the residence with loud voices and doors slamming. An investigation revealed a heated argument between a mother and her son had occurred. Both parties were separated and spoken to. The situation was calm upon police departure, and one of the involved persons opted to leave the residence for the night, ensuring to keep the peace in the absence of police. Nobody suffered any injury, and there was no report of any property damage.
911 call/911 hang-up
Police attended to seven different locations for 911 hang-ups. Once investigations were completed it was revealed that two were dialed in error as the person was attempting to dial 411 assistance. Another revealed a child had hit a 911 dial on an adult’s phone. A fourth call resulted in 911 being called by a woman who was having an argument with her partner about job and sleep issues. Police spoke with these people ensuring all was well. There was no complaint and no evidence to suggest anything else. The couple was provided advice and was requested to call 911 only for emergent circumstances. Both stated they understood. All was peaceful upon police departure. The remaining calls were the result of misdials and another accidental pocket-dial by a man who was shopping at a north-end business centre. He was located by police and found to not be in any difficulty. Other
Police responded to numerous other calls regarding suspicious persons, traffic complaints, landlord and tenant disputes, noise and disturb the peace calls, and criminal complaints involving threats and phone/text frauds. These latter two are still being actively investigated. Police are issuing caution not to open any non-recognized materials or requests from banking or financial institutions issuing statements about accounts, loans, etc. which come in the form of a text message.
