The Haig Road-Station Street project in Belleville’s east end will go ahead in the midst of opposition from some residents and the approval of others.
The decision to approve the project came amidst applause from a packed council chambers Monday night.
It follows years of decision making and debate at two council meetings this year, one at which area residents opposed it, and one where other residents applauded it.
Councillor Mitch Panciuk was successful in getting four-way stops in two areas to slow down traffic.
Councillor Paciuk’s motion also included another $50,000 to increase the bushes and trees along the route near the homes.

Supporting the project, Rosemary Judd-Archer told council property titles were clear in indicating a roadway would be built. She said “The time to approve it is now, today.” She added she knew the road was coming when she moved to the area 19 years ago since it’s on the property title. Other area residents had told council they were not aware of the plan.
An extra $1 million was added to help cover street lighting and curbing, among other items.
The new project cost of $3.14 million (plus HST) will include improved drainage as well as include increased cost due to inflation.
The project has been on the books since 1975.
The tender was awarded to Dekayser Excavating of Colborne.
All members of council voted in favour of the plan.
